Hi everyone!! I hope you are all doing ok! I have not been on here for quite a while but I need advice and this is the best place for it!! I have been taking MTX for about 6 months now (25mg). It is working in modifying the disease but I am having a lot of trouble coping with the side effects I have to say. Basically, I am having to "run" to the toilet about 3 times a day. I get quite a lot of nausea too, especially the day after taking it. I take it with a meal on Wednesday evenings. I also take folic acid on Monday & Friday and hydroxychloroquine twice a day. As the disease is well controlled, I don't have to take any NSAIDs at the moment (touchwood!!) so I havent been taking the omeprazole. Do you think it would help with the symptoms of the MTX if I took it daily?? Also, does anyone take more folic acid for these horrible side effects? Thank you all so much in anticipation of your kind help!!!!! Take care Sarah

Hi Sarah, I had a lot of problems with side effects from mx, same as yourself. I actually switched to self injection once a week which is so much better. I would literally be heaving when I just looked at the tablets, weird I know! I tried also splitting my dose throughout the day and that seemed to help, as long as you take them within I think 12 hours then its ok, but double check on that one.
Glad to hear the mx is controlling things. My dosage is increasing from next week with a view to getting me back to 25mg per week and Im hoping that the mx alone will control things.

Hi Heather!
Thanks for that! I know what you mean about heaving when you look at the tablets!!! I'm going to take them later this evening and I'm dreading it. I think I will go and get fish & chips to take it with, that might help ( well, that's my excuse anyway!!)
Take care

Hi Sarah
I agree with Heather about injections having less side effects. Have you asked your rheummy team about changing to inj?

Hi Sarah,
My consultant said to me that if you took the same dose but every day rather than all at once it would kill you so please don't do this or change the way you take it without getting advice first. Injections may well be the way forward and your rheummy team should be able to sort this out for you.

Hi Sarah, Like other people I was quite ill on the tablets. My consultant suggested self injection and the rheumy nurse showed my wife and I how to do it, though I must admit the thought of my good lady coming at me with a needle sends shivers down my spine, And I do not have her permission to say that ! I must say that since going on the injections I have had no problems concerning my tummy. I do take what I call my anti-sick pills which are called cyclizine. I stopped taking the hydroxychloroqine as I did not think they were helping. John

Hi Sarah I am in exactly the same situation (see my thread on 'Discussions about RA only') so can empathise and tell you that you are not alone. It's early days for me as I've just taken my third dose. I am trying to persevere but struggling. I am going to try some ginger granules later that I got from an Asian shop. At the moment though I can't face them! Best wishes from Naomi X

Hi all Thanks for the advice! I have been on to the consultant and she has told me to stop the MTX until I see her on the 14 th. She said she may let me have the injections as they don't have the same side-effects. I'm silly really as I have been taking this every week for the past 7 months and just put up with it . I am a nurse so you would think I would know better! Have a brilliant weekend everyone, in this beautiful weather!!! Sarah xxx

Hooray. My nurse approved injections for me. She's just got to clear this with the consultant. I'm so glad because I'm fed up with the nausea. it's not getting any better and it's 5 weeks now. Hope it doesn't take long to get the go ahead.
